Fun was had by all at the 15th Annual Ronald McDonald House 5K Run/Walk
Weeks in advance our volunteers and staff went into “Race Action“, bags were stuffed, mailing were done, notices were sent out, details were finalized, errands were run, coffee was made and pizza was ordered!
The big day arrived and it was the perfect day for a race, sunny and clear with temperatures finally dropping below the 90° mark. Over 200 volunteers started the day early in the morning, setting up and making sure everything was in its proper place and ready to go. Banners were hung, tables and chairs were set-up. The registration, raffle, post party registration and water tables were stocked. Over 200 volunteers, many who have been an integral part in many of our 5K Runs worked diligently throughout the day.
Runners and their supporters started gathering at 5:00 and the excitement continued to build. The music was playing, registration tables were filling, as runners prepared for the shot from the starting pistol.
Fisher-Price, a long-time race sponsor and supporter of the Ronald McDonald House arrived early. Fisher-Price volunteers began their set-up which transformed Tripi Field into an interactive play space full of games, toys, Power Wheels cone courses, ball throws and lots of fun. At 5:30, the Fisher-Price Play Space opened the gate and the children (and parents) flooded the field! Non-runners with young children were in the playground bliss as their runner family members prepared for the race.
The Play Space was open to the public, drawing not only runners but also families from the neighborhood. The Fisher-Price Play Space was free and also included a free raffle. It was a great way to spend the evening!
At 6:30 over 1,000 runners were called to the starting line and anticipation filled the air. Evan Kentile, Buffalo’s first pediatric heart transplant recipient, was introduced and the starting pistol was fired. The runners were off! Supporters filled side walks, cheering on their runners.
Volunteers manned the water stations, handed out bottles water, donated by Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Buffalo, at the Finish Line, and with the help from the Buffalo Police, kept the traffic at Bay
The post party started hopping as runners crossed the finish line. The grills were going, drinks were chilled and beer was poured.
In the back lawn, the owners and operators of McDonald Restaurants of WNY and NWPA generously supplied the picnic and manned the food tables making sure everyone had their fill. Burgers, apple slices, chips and yogurt courtesy of Upstate Farms, were in abundance.
For dessert, Sam’s Club donated their famous home-made chocolate chip cookies, and James Desiderio & Sons topped off the menu with cases of bananas, power food for our runners and non-runners. All in all, it was a yummy picnic with something for everyone.
In the lot behind the House, the post party started hopping with music donated by the Scott Celani Band and ice cold beer donated by Try-It Distributing and Flying Bison Brewing Company. Children danced and adults enjoyed a cold one, as runners anxiously awaited the official results and awards. The raffle was held and wonderful prizes donated by Orville’s Appliances & Mattresses (Samsung Front Load Washer & Dryer), Dick’s Sporting Goods ($300 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card), JetBlue Airlines (2 round trip tickets on JetBlue Airlines), and Dunn Tire ($400 Dunn Tire gift certificate), were won by 4 lucky individuals.
We run because we can!
