New RMHC of WNY Programs Within the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital
Ronald McDonald House Charities of Western New York is expanding our mission beyond the House on West Ferry, and supporting programs that directly improve the health and well-being of children and their families. We are thrilled to announce that RMHC of WNY will sponsor a Family Lounge and a Happy Wheels Cart within the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital when it opens in November of this year.
The Family Lounge will extend the support of our Buffalo Ronald McDonald House into the John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital by offering a quiet, comfortable respite place for families to rest and regroup during their child’s treatment—helping them to reduce stress and focus on their own health and well-being while they take care of their child. The welcoming Family Lounge located on the Family Centered Care Floor (5th floor), is designed to help families forget they are in a hospital setting, even though they are just steps from their child’s bed.
Our Family Lounge will serve families traveling from both near and far. Families coming from 25 miles away or further and staying at the Buffalo Ronald McDonald House in the evening are able to take a break in the Lounge during the day, and families residing in Buffalo only a few blocks away from the hospital who do not wish to leave their child’s side can utilize the Lounge as well.
The Happy Wheels Cart will help support inpatient children and their caregivers by distributing complimentary bottled water, snacks, and activities to help pass the time and brighten days. The Happy Wheels Cart, operated by RMHC of WNY volunteers, will travel through the pediatric hallways visiting families and patients of the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital.
Designed as an outreach program of the Family Lounge, the Happy Wheels Cart allows volunteers to provide the comfort of a snack or beverage for families who have had a long day in the hospital or an activity for their inpatient little ones. This program furthers the vision of bringing comfort and care to families attending to seriously ill children.
