11 May Continuing my Family Tradition
I am all about family. Spending time with my husband, Ken, and teenage daughter, Sienna, is what I love. We do everything together as a family, from trying new restaurants to traveling to volunteering. When I was growing up, my parents always took the time to give back to others, whether bringing bread to the mission or just lending a helping hand.
Today, I am proud to continue that family tradition with my husband, daughter, and even our foreign exchange student, Selen Oz, from Istanbul, Turkey.
I have volunteered at the Buffalo Ronald McDonald House for about eight years. It all started on a golf course, and I don’t even golf! Ingram Micro was hosting a golf tournament to raise money for the Buffalo Ronald McDonald House. I was part of the Ingram Micro HR Team at the time. My “golf” duty was Hole Monitor, and as luck would have it, I was partnered with the House Manager of the Ronald McDonald House. We spoke about the Charity and their mission and scheduled a tour for me to see the House firsthand. After touring the house and meeting the people, I knew volunteering at the RMH would be my perfect fit! When my work circumstances changed, I jumped at the chance to be an RMHC Volunteer.
I volunteer at the house one day a week; it is definitely one of the best days of my week. Helping the guest families, answering their questions, and just being there for them makes me want to be a better person. I love the kids, they really are terrific! It is very uplifting to be there for the guest families and do whatever I and the other volunteers can to help and support them.
We work as a team here, with everyone supporting each other and working together to help in any way we can. You meet people from all over the world. All in all, it all makes being at the Ronald McDonald House the perfect place to be!
Being at the Ronald McDonald House and seeing the struggles of the guest families makes me believe that the human spirit can conquer anything when surrounded by compassion, love, and support.
