24 May Finding Purpose – Kathy Richards
I grew up on a dairy farm in Lockport. As I look at my life, I have always thought I was the luckiest person in the world. I was a fifth and sixth-grade teacher at Olmsted School for 32 years. I have a wonderful husband and a rather rambunctious Shih-poo named Daisy. When I retired from my teaching job, I saw it as a chance to get involved with interesting things and maybe give back to others who might need a boost.
I was trying to find a purpose in my new free time. I had heard about the Buffalo Ronald McDonald House from a teacher colleague who was volunteering at the House. That motivation brought me to the Buffalo Ronald McDonald House about eight years ago.
I really like being a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House. I have found purpose here. Helping others is a very fulfilling feeling. Meeting all the people is the best part – speaking with the families, listening to their stories, and just being there for them. It is a great feeling. It’s why I’m here.
Every Tuesday and Friday afternoon, I volunteer as an administrative assistant. I do all sorts of things at “the desk,” from computer work to stickers, answering the phone, and helping guests’ families. I can grow my skills and organize – one of my most favorite things to do!
I really feel like being part of the RMH family. I always feel welcome, needed, and appreciated. I guess I am one of the luckiest people in the world.
